Hi! I’m looking forward to use Aces 2.0 tonemapper in a game engine. What’s important for me is to keep a good parity between SDR and HDR. HDR will use PQ 1000 nits EOTF but in SDR I’m not exactly sure which EOTF would be the desired and recommended default? I tried SRGB curve, 2.2 and 2.4 power curves in SDR. Most consumer displays dedicated for gaming come with default settings adjusted for SRGB encoded input signal in SDR but to me it looks like applying SRGB curve for ACES 2.0 SDR crushes the blacks too much. 2.4 power curve seems to make them too bright and 2.2 seems like a good middle ground. All of it however seems not super reliable since each display will show the results a bit differently…
I compared one of the reference HDR images and applied ACES 2.0 in SDR with 3 different EOTFs. You can note the dark background behind the people. 2.2 looks most convincing for me but I’m not sure what was the actual real-life visibility of it.
So in general my question is: is there some official recommendation for ACES 2.0 regarding which EOTF in SDR to use for the best match with HDR PQ in terms of luminance? Thanks for your time and insight!
