The point here isn’t to dictate creative intent, but to support it. You’re certainly free to make the reproduction look however you want, but this should be done while looking at the scene referred image though a rendering transform. As @nick points out, creative adjustments to the rendered image are done with an LMT in ACES.
It doesn’t sounds like you’re advocating not using a rendering transform, but if displaying your scene colorimetry directly gives you the look you want and you decide not to use a rendering transform, you’re essentially treating the image as output referred.
