New Here so this may have been discussed. I am getting pretty comfortable using ACES for LOG footage, but there is a problem that I keep running into when I am trying to import standard archival REC.709 footage into a timeline set up for S-LOG footage.
Often when I bring in low-res footage (like clips from TV) and “Input Transform to D65 > Inverse Rec-709 BT.1886” I get this crazy blue artifacting. The color looks accurate, but this blue diamond pattern is everywhere, particularly on the whites.
This process seems to work well when dealing with high resolution 709 footage or Matts, but when I bring in TV footage or sometimes cellphone footage, it gets really distorted.
What is the correct way to bring in this footage without this blue splotching?
I would suggest trying out different scaling algorithms as I’m assuming your input media doesn’t match your timeline resolution. This can be done for the whole project in your project settings or override per clip in the inspector in the Edit page. I’d suggest using a project wide algorithm suited for the hero material and override it on the clip for the oddities like your inverse Rec.709 media.
The Apply resize transformations in […] menu in the Color Space settings also dictates the scaling space which in your case is the timeline space (ACEScct). I think that’s generally fine but you also have a few options there.
