Difference between ACES 1.0 - SDR Cinema and ACES 1.0 - SDR Video to select the one we need

Hi,

I would like to know what is the differences and the best choice between ACES 1.0 - SDR Cinema and ACES 1.0 - SDR Video ?

We’ll put an ACES pipeline in place, because it’s better, and I found the two really great (I prefer the ACES 1.0 - SDR Cinema visualy) but wich one I need to choose ? Each artist have one Eizo monitor and on Windows 11 I saw all are RGB D65 display. I saw in the OCIO file that the SDR Video and the SDR Cinema have transform to match D65 profile.

From my test, it’s seems P3D65 had a bigger “range”.

So that is the better choice in my case ?
Thank you,

Matt

The biggest difference is the EOTF: Cinema is encoded with a gamma 2.6 and Video uses BT.1886 (e.g. gamma 2.4).

Technically, in ACES 1 there are other small differences but those can probably be ignored for this discussion.

Hi,

Oki, thank you for your answer. I’ll use the SDR - Video, it’s closer to that you need in gamma.
Thx,

Matt

From your description it sounds like you are referring to OCIO. OCIOv2 separates the rendering and the the encoding as “View Transforms” and “Displays”. In the Studio and CG configs, the “SDR Video” view transform is paired with the “sRGB” and “Rec.1886 Rec.709” displays, and the “SDR Cinema” one with the “P3-D65” display, which is implicitly 2.6 gamma projection.

The main difference in the view transforms is that the “cinema” one is intended for a dark theatrical viewing environment, and the “video” one for a dim grading suite viewing environment. But as @sdyer says, if you are just looking at the pixel values on the same display, the EOTF difference will be far more significant.

You should be choosing a display device in OCIO Display which matches the actual display you are viewing the images on, and a view transform which is correct for your viewing environment and the capabilities of your display. You should not be choosing between them for aesthetic preference.

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your answers. I’ve choosen the sRGB Display for device and the SDR Video for view transform, this two match our needs. I also customize my OCIO file to have the same result in Maya / Vray / Arnold / Blender / Nuke and Substance painter (Maya… Grrrrrr…). Now, all colors match in all our pipeline  , no more interrogations like “why it’s not the same color that I made on my screen”. We also reset our Eizo to usine presets and it’s better too.

Thx for your help, ACES is really powerfull, not always easier at the first time but when you understood the OCIO file and co, it’s better.
