Well, I think I see now why it’s not recommended to use display transforms on input images. 
RGB values: 47,000+. The custom OCIO colorspace that was recommended to me here (which I guess is the display transform clamped to 1) works great, however. I just found it interesting to see firsthand how the math falls apart when using the wrong transform…
