I also think the perception of lightness/brightness of saturated colors is more complex than something that can be distilled into a single number. Looking at a deep blue LED light for example, I certainly perceive it as both dark and very fluorescent at the same time and a single number can not describe that sensation.

Thanks, this is spot on and I totally agree, Lightness / Brightness, in our context, are 1-dimensional colour appearance attributes. As you rightly point out, perceived colour, by definition, cannot be described by a single attribute.
