ACES Gears Up New Development Efforts - April 2017

Dear ACES Community,

As the incoming ACES Chairs, we’re asking former and new contributors to get involved and to help us take ACES to the next level.

Since ACES 1.0 was released a little over 2 years ago, it has been and continues to be successfully used across all segments of the industry. The underlying concepts of ACES are sound. We’ve learned a lot about how people use ACES and what they feel can be improved, and we are launching the process to do just that: enhance and extend ACES to make it easier to use and to support additional workflows.

As we start up this next round of development, we will do a thorough review and sharing of the feedback we’ve received to date as well as solicit additional input from the broader community. We are also crafting a new process for ongoing development, which we see more like a professional open source effort rather than a highly-centralized software development project. We want a responsive and fast process that incorporates feedback and meaningful participation from all parts of the industry.

In the spirit of community-driven development, our ‘ask’ to you now is:

• Email us at aces@oscars.org and let us know that you’re interested in participating in upcoming development workgroups that will be forming over the next 4-6 weeks.

• Log on to ACESCentral.com, to join the public conversation about ACES development in the Feedback and Requests discussion section http://ACESCentral.com/c/workflow/feedback.

• Start a new thread or join an existing one, and let us know what you think about topics such as colorist workflows, on-set/DIT workflows, VFX workflows, metadata, image support improvements, or whatever is on your mind as it relates to ACES.

We’re on ACESCentral, too, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts - and sharing ours - as we chart the future of ACES together.

Sincerely,

Annie Chang, VP Technology for Marvel Studios - ACES Project Chair
Rod Bogart, HBO’s Director of Production R&D - ACES Project Vice-chair
Joachim Zell, VP Technology for Deluxe/EFILM - ACES Project Vice-chair
