matte paint about aces nuke

Mainly questions about the matte paint , ACES, Nuke, and PS. The references I find are in sRGB. For example, when I bring a white sky image into Photoshop and convert it using utility sRGB texture, many colors change, and redrawing isn’t really an option. If I use the output as input (which visually restores it most perfectly), it causes a bunch of issues in later compositing, like values hitting 16 or certain channels becoming extremely large. How do you usually handle this problem?Thank you .

Which version of aces are you using?

If the output as input is working, you can set a clamp at the value that gets you a 1.0 in your linear space.

As well you can find the srgb values that get you 0.0 and 1.0 in linear and scale , or limit, the values in photoshop. Depending on your skillset you can make a custom ICC profile for Photoshop that can limit the file to values that work with the OCIO srgb and renderer of your choice.

Sorry, I missed your question.

Here is how I am used to deal with matte-painting, Photoshop and ACES:

  • Let’s say I have an ACEScg render that I want to paint over in Photoshop.
  • I would convert it to ACEScct in Nuke and then import it to Photoshop.
  • In Photoshop, I would use a “color lookup” layer to load my “Display” LUT.
  • At exporting from Photoshop, I would disable this layer and import back in Nuke as ACEScct.

I described this workflow more extensively here.

You could grade it to get closer to your final result, rather than inverting the Output Transform.

Chris

Thank you for your reply. Since the new Photoshop already supports OCIO, I’m not sure if the “Color Lookup” feature is still applicable. I’ll test it out. Thanks.

Thank you for your reply. I am using ACES 1.2. I will try your suggestions. Thanks.
