Thanks @TooDee and @Peter_Rixner ! We are about to update the Knowledge Base with an article on this topic. Meanwhile, you can check those related threads :
Hello everybody,
I’m scratching my head around ACES and srgb texturs so I hope somebody can point me in the right direction.
I’m using maya / arnold / Aces_1.0.3 / and megascan textures.
I know it is normal that the textures get darker when you use the Utility-srgb-texture but still I have question on the consequences.
I downloaded the ACEScg_ColorChecker2005.exr from AMPAS github.
My understanding is that it would help me get the correct exposure for my lighting.
So I loaded the checker w…
Hi folks,
I’m a graphics engineer learning about ACES for the first time. I’ve started working on an Unreal project, after they moved to the ACES tonemapper.
When we started developing a look for our game, we found that the textures we were creating in Substance Painter seemed ‘washed out’ when we brought them into Unreal. Specifically, certain yellow and grey hues ended up near the same, and saturation as a whole seemed decreased. After setting up a matching HDRI scene in Unreal and a bit of …
In theory one should be able to read in a linear EXR image with Utility-Linear-sRGB and thus have a linear file that was made using sRGB primaries display the same in ACES.
So I would expect if I viewed an EXR in Nuke default, and viewed the same EXR in ACES, read in with Utility-Linear-sRGB that they would be identical. However as you can see below they look quite different. There is a notable shift in colors (the ACES going towards green) and the blacks are crushed.

For conversion, you could give a try to this tool :
Hello,
Finally after 1month I am happy to share with you the application I have been working on.
First thanks for the feedback provided and thanks to all the people that helped me.
The app allow you to convert quickly hundred of image to a desired colorspace in the chosen format. This is a stand-alone “portable” application that runs only on Windows for now.
The application is available for Free on Gumroad (enter the code free at checkout): https://gum.co/pycocs
The documentation is availab…
You can download it for free and even give feedback to its developer @MrLixm .
Basically most users would complain about their albedo textures being too dark when displayed through the ACES OT. But good news is that the OT also allows artists to use lights with an energy much closer to real life (aka way higher), allowing for a better GI and a more realistic behavior for PBR renders.
Hope this helps (a bit),
Chris
